about

Originally a traditional folk song, Lily Of The West, Zonn updated the lyrics in 2019 to reflect contemporary issues vis-a-vis Refugees and Immigrants. The music was arranged by John Zonn.

lyrics

When first I came to En-ger-land,
My refuge for to seek,
I was given a sanctuary,
Cos I could hardly speak,
They said that I was welcome here,
I was treated like a guest,
The invitation showed to me,
The spirit of The West.

I heard that it is customary,
For those who lend a hand,
To get the thanks, from immigrants,
For lending out their land,
I’ve said that I am grateful,
I shall give what I’m behest,
And I’ve been told, this does uphold,
The spirit of The West.

So I slave away, for little pay,
As a prisoner in chains,
While those in charge can make it large
And id-le people act like drains,
But no-one seems unhappy here,
And if they are, they could protest,
To a distant shore we sail aboard,
The spirit of… the spirit of… the spirit of… The W-e-e-e-e-st.
