about

Billy Bragg wrote a song called A New England, loosely based on A New Jerusalem by William Blake. Kirsty MacColl sung a version of the Bragg song and Bragg wrote a verse especially for her. Bragg then sung the extra verse at live performances of the song. Bragg seemed to believe the covid vaccine passport was necessary for audience members to gain access to his gigs in 2021. This version of the song is about that phenomenon.

lyrics

It was 2021 when I wrote this song,
I am 63/4 now, but I won’t be for long,
Cos I’m a firm believer in the jab of the arm,
And I follow the science, says it will do you no harm.

I know a bit about fascism and history,
But that was bloody yesterdee,
The times have a-changed and now I’m with the Dark Side,
I’m just following orders, from medical apartheid…

I don’t want to catch a cold,
I’m only looking for a new normal,
I just want to feel relaxed,
Just show your passports at the door,
Things won't be the same anymore,
I’m only safe, when you are vaxed.

You loved me then, and you love me still,
I am glad about that, cos I need to pay the bills,
My live business, has gone to shit,
Ever since the covid, pan-demic hit.

I want to be with you forever,
Now that can happen as, we are all in this together,
We must protect the En Aych Ess,
Just a few more weeks, to get us out of this mess…

I don’t want to catch a cold,
I’m only looking for a new normal,
I just want, to feel relaxed,
Show your passports at the door,
Shared respon-sib-il-ity,
I’m only safe when you are vaxed.

My head was getting very dark,
So, I stood with people in the park,
They had some rational ideas,
And said some things, to allay my fears.

Once upon a time at home,
I read some posts on Telegram,
They said that none of it was true,
That the virus was no worse than Flu.

I still don’t want to catch a cold,
I’m not looking for a new normal,
And I just want to relax.
Scrap those passports at the door,
Do you be-lieve the Bee Bee See?
Do you feel free, when you are vaxed?

I still don’t want to catch a cold,
I’m not looking for a new normal,
And I just want to relax.
Scrap those passports at the door,
Things won't be the same anymore,
Do you feel free, when you are vaxed?

Do you feel free, when you are vaxed?
Do you feel free, when you are vaxed?
Do you feel free, when you are vaxed?
Do you feel free, when you are vaxed?
Cos I'm relaxed, now you are vaxed.
